From a cobbler's son to a global fashion icon
In short: Jimmy Choo's path to luxury was paved with handmade leather and a royal invitation. Before he was a household name, he was a child crafting slippers in a Malaysian workshop. His journey from bespoke craftsmanship to a global empire reveals the delicate balance between couture artistry and commercial scale.
Born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1948, Jimmy Choo was immersed in shoemaking from childhood. His father ran a cobbler shop where Choo learned to craft shoes by hand, making his first pair—leather slippers for his mother—at just 11 years old. This foundation of manual skill led him to study shoe design at Cordwainers Technical College in London during the early 1980s, graduating in 1983.
Choo established his own business, Lucky Shoes, in 1986, opening a boutique in an abandoned hospital building in London's East End. His reputation for vibrant, colorful designs grew rapidly, earning him an eight-page spread in British Vogue in 1988. This visibility caught the attention of Tamara Mellon, Vogue's accessories editor. Their partnership eventually led to the 1996 co-founding of Jimmy Choo Ltd., a move that transitioned his work from private bespoke commissions to a global ready-to-wear brand.
The brand's meteoric rise was fueled by high-profile associations, most notably with Princess Diana, who became a close friend and frequent client in the early 1990s. However, the business faced internal friction as Choo prioritized the artistry of couture—where a single pair could take two weeks to manufacture with eight people—while his partners sought to scale ready-to-wear production. This tension eventually led Choo to sell his share of the company in 2001, though he remains a significant influence in the fashion world through his own couture lines and academies.
