In short: Ozone (O3) is a dynamically unstable molecule that is explosive in liquid form and toxic to the lungs when inhaled. Yet, for over 150 years, proponents have claimed it can treat everything from infected wounds to chronic diseases by supercharging oxygen metabolism and stimulating the immune system.

The core of ozone therapy lies in its high energy state. Because O3 is an unstable molecule with excess energy, it possesses a unique capacity to oxidize organic compounds. In clinical settings, this oxidation is used to disrupt the integrity of bacterial cell envelopes, inhibit fungal growth, and damage viral capsids. By destroying these structures through peroxidation, medical ozone acts as a potent disinfectant against bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and protozoa.

Beyond disinfection, researchers suggest that ozone therapy may influence human physiology by stimulating oxygen metabolism. It is theorized to increase the red blood cell glycolysis rate, which boosts 2,3-diphosphoglycerate levels and subsequently increases the amount of oxygen released to tissues. Furthermore, it can activate the Krebs cycle to stimulate ATP production while inducing the production of vasodilators like prostacyline and enzymes that act as free radical scavengers.

However, the medical community remains deeply divided on its safety and efficacy. While some sources claim its effects are proven and consistent with minimal side effects, the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that this substance is a poisonous gas lacking any recognized therapeutic utility for particular treatments. The FDA notes that for ozone to be germicidal, it must reach concentrations far higher than what humans can safely tolerate. Consequently, while it shows promise in vitro—such as deactivating HIV particles in samples—well-designed studies have shown it to be ineffective in living patients.

Because of these risks, the therapy is strictly regulated regarding administration. It should never be inhaled, as this causes severe lung irritation and fluid buildup. Instead, practitioners use specialized techniques like transcutaneous gas baths at low pressure or ozonized water sprays for dental medicine to ensure the gas does not escape into the surrounding air.
