The survival of a 240-year-old newspaper through radical ownership shifts
In short: In early 2026, Pittsburgh's largest newspaper faced an existential crisis. After a three-year strike and a federal labor law judgment, the paper was on the brink of permanent closure—a move that would have left the nation's largest media market without a local daily.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (the PG) has deep roots in American history, tracing its lineage back to 1786. The publication became the initial periodical printed beyond the Allegheny Mountains and famously featured the fresh U.S. Constitution. Constitution. Over two centuries, it survived through numerous mergers, including a pivotal 1927 consolidation where William Randolph Hearst and Paul Block swapped assets to form the current masthead. The paper's modern era was defined by complex labor and ownership dynamics. In 1960, it entered a production agreement with the Pittsburgh Press Company that lasted over 30 years. However, financial pressures eventually led to a 1992 strike where workers for the Press shut down the Post-Gazette as well.
During this period, the Block family acquired the Press but did not resolve the underlying labor costs, leading to long-term financial instability. The most recent chapter began with a massive three-year strike starting in October 2022. A ruling by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals occurred during November 2025, declaring that PG Publishing breached federal labor statutes through dishonest negotiations. This judgment led Block Communications to announce a total shutdown of operations in May 2026. The closure was narrowly averted in April 2026 when the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism purchased the assets, transitioning the paper into a nonprofit entity where editorial decisions remain local but political endorsements are no longer permitted.
