The first AI foundation model has reached orbit
In short: NASA and IBM have successfully deployed Prithvi, the first geospatial AI foundation model, onto in-orbit platforms. By processing massive amounts of Earth observation data in space, this breakthrough technology could fundamentally transform how we monitor disasters, track floods, and predict the future of our planet's resources.
Traditionally, satellites collect vast amounts of Earth observation data that must be transmitted back to Earth for analysis. This process is often slowed by bandwidth limitations, as active satellites frequently cannot accept large software updates. To solve this, researchers have successfully demonstrated the Prithvi Geospend Geospatial AI foundation model aboard two in-orbit platforms: the South Australian government’s Kanyini satellite and the Thales Alenia Space IMAGIN-e payload on the International Space Station.
Prithvi is an open-source model developed by a collaboration including NASA’s IMPACT AI team and IBM. Unlike specialized, lightweight AI, a foundation model is trained on enormous amounts of unlabeled data, allowing it to recognize patterns invisible to humans. Prithvi was specifically trained on 13 years of global geospatial data from the Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 datasets. Such instruction enables the model to perform diverse functions, including disaster tracking, flood plain mapping, and crop yield forecasting.
The deployment of Prithvi highlights a new efficiency in space computing. Because it is a foundation model, researchers do not need to upload entirely new software for every new task; they only need to transmit a small, extra decoder package to the satellite. This significantly reduces the bandwidth required for updates. Looking forward, researchers like Dr. Andrew Du suggest that such models could eventually allow satellite operators to interact with spacecraft using natural language, asking questions about system status or onboard data through conversational interfaces.
