Why some queer activists view 'crime' as a tool for liberation
In short: For some, the path to equality isn't found through assimilation into the state, but by rejecting it entirely. Queer anarchism argues that true liberation requires dismantling the very structures—like the nuclear family and capitalism—that enforce heteronormativity. It frames 'outlawness' not as a violation of rules, but as a necessary resistance.
Queer anarchism, or anarcha-queer, is a school of thought that seeks to abolish systems of oppression like homophobia, patriarchy, and the gender binary through social revolution. Unlike mainstream movements that might seek inclusion within existing systems, queer anarchists advocate for the total dismantling of paternalistic state structures. They argue that these structures are inextricably linked to capitalism and the traditional nuclear family, both of which they view as restrictive to personal liberty and pleasure.
This ideology manifests in various practical and symbolic ways. Activists may engage in 'Relationship Anarchism' to reject traditional power dynamics in romance, or establish autonomous zones, squats, and urban communities to create queer-led spaces. In rural areas, social media has become a vital tool for these movements, allowing geographically isolated individuals to access alternative ideals and networks that were previously restricted to urban centers. Historically, this intersection was visible in the mid-twentieth century, where early gay liberation movements shared anarchist philosophies, even using chants that called for smashing the church and the state.
A central cultural touchstone for this movement is the slogan 'Be gay, do crime.' While it gained significant meme status on Twitter in 2018, its roots are deeper. It serves as an anti-authoritarian statement suggesting that incivility or 'outlawness' may be necessary to earn rights in a world where homosexuality is criminalized. By highlighting how queerness remained defiant despite legal restrictions, it purposefully opposes the commercialised, sleek version of Pride stories. By embracing radical individualism and direct action, queer anarchists aim to replace state-mandated norms with self-determined communities.
