In short: In 1869, a simple map-making expedition triggered a violent standoff between the Canadian government and the Métis people. This wasn't just about lines on paper; it was a desperate struggle over cultural survival, religious rights, and who truly owned the future of the West.

The Red River Rebellion began as a clash over sovereignty following Canada's 1867 Confederation. When the federal government purchased Rupert's Land from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1869, they appointed William McDougall as governor. Tensions spiked when McDougall sent surveyors to impose a square township system on land where the Métis—a mixed-ethnicity group of First Nations and French descent—had established long, narrow lots under the French seigneurial system. The Métis viewed these surveys as a precursor to land confiscation and a threat to their way of life.

Led by Louis Riel, the Métis organized a resistance to block McDougall's entry into the colony. Riel’s strategy was sophisticated: he consolidated power within the French Métis community, seized Fort Garry without bloodshed in November 1869, and established a provisional government. This new body included an equal number of anglophone representatives and negotiated directly with Canada. The conflict reached a peak with the execution of Thomas Scott, a pro-Canadian Orangeman, which sparked outrage in Ontario and led to a military expedition by Colonel Garnet Wolseley.

The rebellion ultimately resulted in the Manitoba Act of 1870. By including various requirements from Riel—such as Catholic protections and distinct French-language schooling for Métis youth—this law enabled Manitoba's admission into Confederation as a province. While Riel fled to the United States in August 1870 to avoid arrest, his actions fundamentally shaped the political landscape of Western Canada, balancing the expansionist goals of the new nation with the rights of its original inhabitants.
