In short: A powerful businessman and US Senator, Reed Smoot faced intense scrutiny over his religious ties. Despite being offered the presidency on the condition that he renounce his faith, he famously declared he would rather be a deacon. His political legacy remains defined by both this devotion and controversial economic legislation.

Reed Smoot’s political career was defined by both immense influence and intense controversy. After being elected to the US Senate by the Utah legislature in 1902, his seat was challenged during the four-year 'Smoot Investigations.' Opponents argued that his position as an apostle in the LDS Church made his presence unconstitutional, alleging that the Church was interfering in American politics. Despite a committee recommendation to refuse him his seat, the Senate voted to vindicate him, allowing him to serve from 1903 to 1933.

Beyond the religious debates, Smoot left a massive mark on global economics through the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Co-sponsored with Representative Willis Hawley, the legislation raised nearly 900 import duties. While intended to protect American farmers and businesses, the act is widely regarded by economists as a catalyst for the worsening Great Depression. It raised average tariffs by approximately 20 percent and prompted international retaliation, contributing to a massive decline in global trade.

Smoot's personal life was a testament to his religious devotion. He famously stated that he would prefer being a deacon to being President of the United States. Even during high-stakes diplomatic meetings, such as a banquet with the Governor of the Bank of England, he maintained his religious principles, such as adhering to the Word of Wisdom. He died in February 1941 at age 79 following a fall in Florida, leaving behind a legacy as both a significant legislator and a prominent religious leader.
