Empagliflozin reduces risk of kidney disease progression and cardiovascular death
In short: Researchers conducting the EMPA-KIDNEY trial found that patients with chronic kidney disease saw a lower risk of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death when taking empagliflozin. The study involved 6,609 participants who were randomly assigned to receive either 10 mg of the medication daily or a placebo over a median follow-up of two years.
This randomized trial demonstrates that empagliflozin provides protection against kidney decline and cardiovascular death across various patient subgroups, including those with and without diabetes. The study shows a significant reduction in the composite primary outcome compared to a placebo.
The research was conducted through a large-scale randomized controlled trial, though the study focuses on patients at risk for disease progression rather than all kidney disease patients.
Why it matters: Empagliflozin may help protect kidney function and reduce cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease.
