Losartan reduces kidney disease progression in patients with type 2 diabetes
In short: Researchers conducting a randomized, double-blind study of 1,513 patients found that the drug losartan helps protect kidney function. In patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy, the medication was associated with a lower risk of significant renal decline and end-stage renal disease compared to a placebo, even when patients were already receiving standard blood pressure treatments.
This study investigated whether blocking the renin-angiotensin system could slow kidney damage in type 2 diabetics, a group where such evidence was previously lacking. The researchers observed that losartan significantly lowered the risk of doubling serum creatinine levels and reaching end-stage renal disease.
The study was conducted over a mean of 3.4 years. While the drug showed clear renal benefits and reduced heart failure hospitalizations, it did not appear to reduce the overall rate of death or cardiovascular morbidity compared to the placebo group.
Why it matters: Losartan provides significant renal protection for patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.
