In short: A rapid systematic review of 18 studies found that pandemics and public health measures, such as school closures and social distancing, are associated with increased anxiety, depression, and sleep or appetite disturbances in children and adolescents. The research also observed higher rates of stress, worry, and social or risky behavioral problems during these periods.

By synthesizing data from randomized trials, observational studies, and qualitative research, the review identified that interventions like art-based programs and clinician-led psychosocial services can effectively decrease these mental health issues. The findings suggest that the long-term consequences for young people may be more enduring than for adults.

A limitation of this study is that the final analysis was based on a small number of articles selected from a much larger initial pool of retrieved research.

Why it matters: Identifying effective interventions like art-based programs is vital for supporting youth mental health during global health crises.
