The programmer who built a digital temple for a literal God
In short: Terry A. Davis was a gifted engineer who believed he was commanded by God to build a successor to the Second Temple. The result was TempleOS: a complex, 120,000-line operating system that functions as a divine oracle, blending high-level coding with ancient religious devotion.
Terry A. Davis was a highly skilled electrical engineer and programmer who, following a 'revelation from God' in 1996, began a decade-long project to create TempleOS. While Davis struggled with schizophrenia and manic episodes—which led to multiple hospitalizations and periods of homelessness—he remained 'always lucid' when discussing computer science. He developed HolyC, a custom programming language that sits between C and C++, to serve as the foundation for the system. He designed every component alone, including the compiler, editor, kernel, and the original programming language. TempleOS is not merely a functional piece of software; it is a theological artifact. Davis claimed God dictated specific technical constraints, such as a 640x480 resolution and a 16-color display. The system includes an 'oracle' that generates pseudo-random text, which Davis interpreted as coded messages from the divine, similar to a Ouija board.
One bundled game, 'AfterEgypt,' even features a 'high-speed stopwatch' used to consult this oracle on topics ranging from the 11th commandment to the favorite national anthem of Latvia. Despite the unconventional nature of the project, the technical community recognized Davis's immense talent. Some engineers compared the feat of building a complete operating system alone to constructing a skyscraper by a single person. While Davis's online presence was often marred by offensive language and delusions of being persecuted by the CIA, his work earned favorable reviews from tech journals. His life serves as a complex intersection of profound technical achievement and the isolating reality of severe mental illness.
