Scientists complete a highly accurate map of the human euchromatic genome
In short: An international research collaboration has successfully refined the draft human genome into a nearly complete sequence. By filling in critical gaps, the team produced a version of the euchromatic genome that covers about 99% of the sequence with extremely high precision.
The researchers achieved this by refining the 2001 draft to create Build 35, reducing the genome to just 341 gaps across 2.85 billion nucleotides. While this provides a stable foundation for studying gene evolution and number, some gaps related to complex DNA duplications still remain unsequenced.
Why it matters: This near-complete sequence provides a precise foundation for studying human gene evolution and biomedical research.
