Six of nine planetary boundaries have been breached by human activity

In short: A modelling study of Earth's planetary boundaries found that six of the nine critical limits have been transgressed. This suggests that the planet is moving well outside the safe operating space for human civilization.

Researchers used Earth system modelling to assess the status of nine planetary boundaries. They found that transgression levels have increased for all previously identified boundaries, including ocean acidification and aerosol loading.

The study highlights that anthropogenic impacts on climate and land systems must be viewed within a systemic context, as these changes interact to influence the entire Earth system.

Why it matters: The planet's stability is being challenged as multiple critical environmental boundaries are being crossed.
