How a silent performer became a global comedy sensation
In short: Known as Tape Face, Sam Wills has built a career on silence. By taping his mouth shut, the New Zealand-born performer uses mime and physical comedy to captivate audiences, proving that sometimes, the most powerful way to deliver a punchline is to say nothing at all.
Born in New Zealand in 1978, Sam Wills began his journey in the performing arts at just thirteen years old. After training as a clown and earning a diploma in New Circus from the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology's Circus School, he began experimenting with shock comedy and vaudeville. This diverse skillset eventually led him to perform under the stage name 'The Boy With Tape On His Face,' a persona defined by the physical restriction of his mouth. His early career included performing as a busker and a mime artist. He also reached the finals during America's Got Talent's eleventh season.
Wills employs a deliberately minimalist media strategy. He rarely gives interviews, a tactic he modeled after Kate Moss to ensure his performance remains the sole focus. This approach helped him transition from the Christchurch entertainment scene to international stages. He has appeared on major television programs, including reaching the finals of America's Got Talent in 2016 and appearing on Canada's Got Talent in 2025. His career includes a variety of accolades, such as winning the Billy T Award in 2005. He has also been recognised with the Best New Face award for the 2001 Pulp Comedy season.
His success is rooted in a blend of traditional circus and modern physical comedy. Critics have noted that his simplicity creates a unique complexity, using facial expressions and body movements to drive laughter. Today, he maintains a residency in Las Vegas, where his doppelganger, T2, even performs in his place at the House of Tape when he is touring. His performances have graced prestigious venues like London's Royal Albert Hall. Additionally, he has been featured in YouTube Rewind 2016.
