The ancient university where scholars traveled long distances to master the divine
In short: Between the 6th and 12th centuries CE, Sharada Peeth was a premier South Asian center of learning. This temple university was so influential it gave its name to the Sharada script and turned Kashmir into a renowned intellectual hub known as 'Sharada Desh'.
Situated within Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir's Neelum Valley, Sharada Peeth functioned as a place of worship and a centre for study. Its historical prominence is documented by various sources, including the 11th-century poet Bilhana and the traveler Al-Biruni. While Al-Biruni recorded the shrine based on hearsay, he listed it among the most famous Hindu temples in South Asia, alongside the Multan Sun Temple and Somnath.
The site holds profound spiritual significance for Kashmiri Pandits, who view it as a Maha Shakta pitha—the location of the goddess Sati's fallen right hand. The goddess worshipped here is seen as a tripartite embodiment of Shakti: Sharada, the goddess of learning; Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge; and Vagdevi, the goddess of speech. This spiritual weight is reinforced by local legends, such as the story of the sage Shandilya, who encountered the goddess near the Madhumati stream.
The temple's history is marked by both devotion and conflict. In 1422 CE, the Kashmiri Muslim sultan Zain-ul-Abidin visited the temple seeking a vision of the goddess. Later, during the 16th century, the Mughal Grand Vizier Abu'l-Fazl described the stone temple as being regarded with great veneration. The site's importance shifted significantly following the 1947–1948 war, which led to the temple's disuse and the migration of many Kashmiri Pandits, leaving the ancient center of learning a ruin in the valley of Mount Harmukh.
