In short: In many Eastern traditions, the ultimate spiritual goal isn't just personal peace—it is the systematic dismantling of the ego. This is achieved through Sevā, a practice of selfless service where the act of helping others becomes a precise mechanism for internal purification and spiritual liberation.

Defined as 'selfless and meaningful service', the Sanskrit word Sevā appears in several religions like Sikhism, Jainism, and Hinduism, primarily functioning by discarding individual desires. In Hinduism, it is viewed as a form of dharma (righteousness) that generates good karma, ultimately helping the atma (soul) achieve moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. It is often practiced as sādhanā, a disciplined effort to transcend the ego by focusing on the needs of others.

Jainism offers a unique metaphysical layer to the concept. Here, Sevā is rooted in the aphorism 'souls render service to one another.' It is an ethical expression of non-violence (ahiṃsā) and mutual interdependence. For a practitioner, service is a tool for 'minimising karmic bondage' and purifying the soul (jīva). It is not merely a social good but a spiritual necessity that requires 'right perception' to ensure that the act of helping does not inadvertently cause harm to even the smallest living beings.

Sikhism integrates this into a rigorous framework of 'kar sevā' (voluntary service). It demands that service be performed with three specific internal qualities: nishkam (without desire), nishkapat (without intentions), and nimarta (with humility). This is categorized into three modes: tan (physical labor), man (mental service, like studying to help others), and dhan (material support). By merging service with worship, the practitioner operates on the principle that serving humanity is a direct way of serving the Divine, effectively collapsing the boundary between the sacred and the secular.
