In short: A demon virus plagues the Embryon tribe within the Junkyard, a combat simulator defined by constant rainfall. This infection grants them terrifying powers but carries a horrific price: they must consume their enemies to satiate an insatiable hunger, or risk descending into a mindless, berserk state.

The narrative of Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga centers on the Embryon tribe's struggle for survival in a digital world. After being infected by a demon virus during a border skirmish with the Vanguards, the inhabitants are branded with marks representing their 'Atma.' This infection forces them to awaken basic emotions and creates a predatory cycle where they must devour other tribes—such as the Solids or Brutes—to survive. The only sanctuary is the Karma Temple in Sahasrara, where leaders meet under the command of a being named Angel.

The mechanics of this struggle are reflected in the game's 'Press Turn' system and character progression. Players manage three allies who can transform into demon forms to fight. To grow stronger, characters must gain Atma points by defeating enemies; notably, eating defeated foes yields a greater amount of Atma. However, this survival strategy carries risks: overeating can afflict characters with status ailments. Characters also navigate 'Mantra Grids,' using in-game currency (Macca) to buy abilities and mastering them with the very energy gained from combat.

The stakes escalate in the sequel as the Embryon escape the Junkyard into a real world devastated by the 'Black Sun.' Here, the demon virus becomes a survival necessity, as only the infected can withstand the sun's rays. The conflict shifts to a fight against the Karma Society and an entity known as the EGG—a man-made replica of God. The duology explores themes of forced evolution, where the line between human identity and demonic instinct is blurred by a virus that rewards predation with power.

The original concept for this story was drafted by author Yu Godai before she withdrew due to health issues. While the first game focuses on the destruction of the Junkyard simulator, the second expands into a global catastrophe where Angel seeks to use the demon virus to create a society ruled only by the strong.
