A city of history, from cotton gins to semiconductor fabs
In short: Sherman, Texas, is a study in industrial evolution. From its roots as a cattle rendezvous and cotton hub to its current role as a high-tech corridor, the city has consistently reinvented its economic engine while preserving a complex, often turbulent, social history.
Founded in the 1840s and named for Texas Revolution hero General Sidney Sherman, the city served as a vital stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. Its early economy was built on the rugged demands of the frontier, serving as a rendezvous for cattle drovers and buffalo hunters. By the mid-19th century, it transitioned into an agricultural powerhouse, developing industries for cotton ginning, cottonseed-oil milling, and flour milling. The 20th century brought a shift toward heavy industry and energy. During the 1930s, extraction of regional gas and oil began, followed by a post-WWII industrial boom producing steel, aluminium, surgical tools, and medicines.
This industrial backbone laid the groundwork for the city's modern identity as a manufacturing hub. Today, Sherman is undergoing a high-tech transformation. In 2022, Texas Instruments broke ground on a massive Integrated Circuit fab campus. By late 2025, operations are set to begin on a $30 billion semiconductor wafer fabrication plant near the city's southern limits, alongside a $5 billion wafer factory from GlobalWafers. This shift from cotton to silicon represents a massive leap in the city's economic scale and technological significance.
The city's history is also marked by significant social and natural upheaval. It was the site of a devastating F5 tornado in 1896 that killed 73 people. Socially, the city faced a period of intense violence during the 1930 Sherman Riot, where an attempt to lynch an African American man led to the burning of the Grayson County Courthouse and the city's black business section, resulting in a ten-day period of martial law.
