In short: In the heart of West Texas, a unique tradition serves a dual purpose: entertainment and medicine. Every March, Sweetwater hosts the world's largest rattlesnake round-up, where thousands of snakes are captured to be used in the production of life-saving snakebite serums.

Known as the 'Wind Turbine Capital of Texas', Sweetwater, Texas, acts as the primary hub for the Western Hemisphere's top wind power area. This industrial zone was forged through a legacy of enduring extreme weather. The town's early growth was significantly hindered by a severe blizzard in 1885 and a devastating drought from 1886 to 1887, events so impactful they inspired Dorothy Scarborough’s 1925 novel, The Wind.

The town's unique relationship with local wildlife is most visible during its annual Rattlesnake Roundup. Held since 1958 by the Sweetwater Jaycees, the event involves capturing live snakes that are subsequently displayed at the Nolan County Coliseum. Beyond the spectacle, these snakes are utilized for medical research and the production of snakebite serum, providing a practical application for the region's biodiversity.

The economic backbone of the area has shifted from early cattle and cotton trading to a diverse production hub. A major surge in wind energy has occurred here, despite the area still being a core site for cattle, oil, and cotton. With over 1,500 MW of capacity, Nolan County would be the eighth-biggest 'nation' for wind power production if it were independent. This transition from traditional ranching to high-tech energy production highlights the region's adaptability.

Demographically, Sweetwater maintains a steady population, hovering between 11,000 and 13,000 since 1940. As of the 2020 census, the city reported a median age of 38.3 years. Despite its rural surroundings, 97.5% of residents live in urban areas, reflecting a concentrated community life centered around its historical rail lines and modern industrial achievements.
