A county defined by its history and demographic shifts
In short: Sumter County is a landscape of complex layers, from its 18th-century roots to its modern role as a military and industrial hub. While its boundaries have shifted over centuries, its identity remains anchored in a diverse tapestry of ancestry, labor, and economic evolution.
Sumter County's geography and identity were forged through a series of legislative partitions. Created in 1798 from Clarendon, Claremont, and Salem Counties, the region was originally known as Sumter District. A pivotal fire in 1801 destroyed the district's records, forcing historians to rely on family genealogies and legislative archives to trace the area's origins back to St. Mark's Parish. Significant territorial changes occurred in 1855, when the district was partitioned to form Clarendon District, and again in 1902, when a large northern section was detached to form Lee County.
The county's demographic profile reveals a unique cultural heritage. It is home to a notable population of people with Turkish ancestry, descending from those who fled the Ottoman Empire to serve in the American Revolution. By the 2020 census, the population reached 105,556, with a racial makeup of 46.3% Black or African American and 44.9% White. The community is also characterized by its age distribution, where the median age is 38.9 years, and nearly 18% of residents are 65 or older.
Economically and socially, Sumter County serves as a vital regional center. It hosts Shaw AFB, one of the largest bases in the USAF's Air Combat Command, and major employers like Becton Dickinson and Prisma Health. Despite its industrial and military presence, the county faces significant economic challenges: approximately 19.4% of the population lives below the poverty line, with a disproportionately high rate of 29.1% among those under age 18. This interplay between historical legacy and modern economic reality defines the county's current trajectory.
