In short: In 1831, Takashimaya began as a mere 3.6 square meter stall in Kyoto. Today, it is a massive multinational corporation with branches across Asia, evolving from a specialized kimono merchant into a diverse retail giant spanning electronics, apparel, and even international luxury markets.

The origins of Takashimaya trace back to a sole proprietorship owned by Shinshichi Iida. Operating out of a tiny 3.6 square meter space in Kyoto, the original business specialized in selling gofuku, or formal kimonos. This modest beginning laid the foundation for a commercial expansion that would span centuries and continents. This initial merchant venture was originally established as a sole proprietorship. It focused specifically on providing formal attire known as gofuku.

Following the Meiji Restoration, the company aggressively expanded its reach. By 1876, it had entered the export business, and by 1903, it had established international offices in Paris and London. The company underwent significant structural changes during the early 20th century, transitioning from a gomei kaisha (unlimited liability company) in 1909 to a kabushiki kaisha (stock company) in 1919.

The 20th century brought both prosperity and devastation. While the company saw major expansion in the early 1930s—including the opening of a '10, 20 and 50 sen store' in Osaka—its flagship locations in Tokyo and Osaka survived the firebombings of 1945 to serve as vital logistics centers during the occupation. Despite modern challenges, such as the 2010 closure of its New York City Fifth Avenue store to refocus on Asian markets, Takashimaya remains a dominant force in the Sanwa Group keiretsu. The enterprise even introduced an American-style suburban shopping centre in Japan during the late 1960s. Furthermore, the firm maintains a cross-shareholding tie with H2O Retailing despite a failed merger attempt in 2010.
