In short: In 2001, an Australian game studio faced total collapse. Today, it is a powerhouse that has developed nearly 100 titles and secured major partnerships with giants like Google and Nintendo. This is how a studio survived financial crises to become a pillar of the global gaming industry.

Founded in 1994 by Andrew Bailey and Trevor Nuridin, Tantalus Media (originally Tantalus Entertainment) navigated a volatile early history. After being acquired by Perfect Entertainment in 1995 to port titles like Stargate and Wipeout, the founders bought it back in 1999. However, the company hit a breaking point in 2001, facing bankruptcy until Tom Crago took over as CEO.

Crago's leadership marked a turning point of technical innovation and commercial success. The studio developed a specialized engine for 3D graphics on the Game Boy Advance, leading to award-winning titles like Top Gear Rally in 2003. A major milestone occurred in 2007 with the release of Pony Friends; it sold one million units in a single year, becoming the highest-selling single-format game developed in Australia at that time.

The studio's journey wasn't without hurdles. The 2007-2009 financial crisis forced the closure of its Brisbane office and significant staff reductions. Despite this, Tantalus pivoted by launching 'Straight Right' to target core markets and securing high-profile ports for titles like Mass Effect 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

In March 2021, Keywords Studios acquired an 85% stake in the company for US$46.8 million. This transition into a larger corporate structure allowed Tantalus to expand its footprint across Australia with new studios in Adelaide and Brisbane. By 2024, the studio reached new frontiers by partnering with Google to develop games for wearable fitness trackers like the Fitbit Ace LTE.
