The architecture of your skeleton is categorized by six distinct forms

Types of Bones Anatomy: Long, Short, Flat, Irregular, Sesamoid, Sutural · 4:18 · Video: RegisteredNurseRN · Watch at the source

In short: This video provides a comprehensive breakdown of the 206 bones in the human skeleton, categorizing them into four major and two minor types based on their unique anatomical structures.

Bones are classified primarily by shape and composition. Long bones, the most common type, are longer than they are wide and feature a compact bone shaft with bulky ends containing spongy bone. In contrast, short bones are cube-like, consisting mostly of spongy bone wrapped in a thin compact layer.

The remaining categories include flat bones, which provide organ protection through thin plates; irregular bones, defined by unique shapes that defy standard categories; and two minor types: sesamoid bones (short bones embedded in tendons) and sutural bones (tiny independent bones found within cranial sutures).
