Your eyes are not solid objects but complex biological machines
In short: The human eye is the second most complex organ in the body. This 3D animation reveals how this small structure processes light and oxygen to create your visual world.
Despite appearing as a solid sphere, the pupil is actually a hole that looks black because no light exists inside the eyeball. When camera flashes turn eyes red, it is because light is passing through that opening and reflecting off the back of the eye.
The cornea functions uniquely by breathing oxygen directly from the air rather than relying on blood vessels. This area is densely packed with nerves; when they detect a foreign object, they trigger the fastest muscles in the human body to react. The entire organ is roughly the size of a ping pong ball and contains over 2 million working parts.
