From Olympic podiums to parliament: the rise of a teal pioneer
In short: Zali Steggall broke barriers as Australia's first individual female Winter Olympic medalist. Now, she is reshaping the political landscape. By blending conservative economic views with progressive environmental stances, she pioneered the 'teal' independent movement, proving that a diverse ideological bridge can disrupt long-standing political dynasties.
Steggall's journey to political influence began on the slopes of the French Alps. Moving to France in 1978, she began ski racing in Morzine, eventually becoming a member of the French junior skiing team at age 14. Her elite career culminated in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal in slalom. This achievement was historic, marking her as Australia's first individual medalist and first female medalist in the Winter Games.
Her success was a catalyst for systemic change in Australian sports. Following that occurrence, the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia was formed by the Australian Olympic Committee through the expansion of the Australian Ski Institute. This new initiative received a million-dollar annual budget and became the nation's first federal government-funded, full-time training program for winter sports. This infrastructure shift led to an immediate upturn in results, producing numerous gold medalists across various winter disciplines.
Transitioning from athlete to barrister and politician, Steggall disrupted the 'blue-ribbon' political status quo in 2019. Running as an independent, she defeated incumbent former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in the seat of Warringah. Her victory was significant not just for the seat's history—it was the first time the Liberal party had lost it since 1922—but for her role as a pioneer of the 'teal' independents. This movement seeks to combine conservative economic policies with progressive views on climate change and mental health.
Steggall's political career has been marked by a focus on truth and transparency. She introduced the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment (Stop the Lies) Bill in 2021 to crack down on political misinformation and has consistently advocated for climate action, including supporting policies to move toward a 50 percent electric vehicle target by 2030. Allegra Spender, a teal MP, joined Steggall in 2026 to launch the Community Strong Australia party.
