In short: Held in Portland, this draft marked a turning point for the league. While the top three picks were undisputed superstars, the night also featured the debut of the 'green room' experience and a highly anticipated prospect nicknamed after Michael Jordan, whose career would take a much different path.

On June 24, 1992, at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon, the NBA held its first draft outside of New York. The event was headlined by three 'can't-miss' prospects: Shaquille O'Neal, Alonzo Mourning, and Christian Laettner. All three eventually reached the Hall of Fame, though their paths differed. O'Neal and Mourning were inducted as individual players, while Laettner, an Olympic Gold Medalist with the 1992 Dream Team, was inducted as part of a team. Interestingly, this trio would eventually reunite on the 2005 Miami Heat.

The draft also highlighted the evolving spectacle of the 'green room.' By 1992, this staging area had become a televised fixture where anticipated draftees waited to shake hands with Commissioner David Stern. For this draft, the NBA's team presidents and general managers selected the top 14 prospects to attend. However, the list was not without controversy, as Latrell Sprewell from the University of Alabama was a notable absence from the invited group.

While the top of the draft was star-studded, other players faced vastly different fates. Harold Miner, nicknamed 'Baby Jordan' due to his resemblance to Michael Jordan, was selected 12th overall. Despite winning two slam dunk contests, his career was brief and plagued by injuries, lasting only four years. Meanwhile, the draft saw a significant shift in player demographics; for the first time since 1985, no overseas underclassmen entered the draft, and for the first time since 1986, no foreign-born underclassmen were included.

The draft also saw a notable trend in collegiate loyalty. For the tenth consecutive year, no college underclassmen withdrew their entry. Instead, sixteen college underclassmen successfully applied for early entry, contributing to a draft class that included several future All-Stars like Latrell Sprewell and Tom Gugliotta.
