In short: In a draft defined by defensive dominance, the first six picks were all defensive players, shattering previous records. While teams scrambled for defensive talent, a projected top pick shocked the league by signing with the Canadian Football League instead, proving that even the most anticipated draft days are full of surprises.

The 1991 NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting, held April 21–22 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, remains a statistical anomaly in league history. The event began with an unprecedented run of defensive talent: the first six selections were all defensive players. This shattered the previous record, as no prior draft had started with more than three consecutive defensive picks. The Dallas Cowboys initiated this trend by using the first overall pick to select Russell Maryland.

Amidst the defensive focus, the draft featured notable long-term narratives. Raghib Ismail, a wide receiver widely projected as the number one overall pick, opted to sign with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on the day of the draft. Despite this move, the Los Angeles Raiders selected him in the fourth round, 100th overall. Ismail eventually joined the Raiders in 1993 after completing two seasons in Canada. Other selections proved to be future legends, such as quarterback Brett Favre, taken 33rd overall by the Atlanta Falcons, and cornerback Aeneas Williams, selected 59th overall by the Phoenix Cardinals.

The legacy of the 1991 class is cemented by the eventual recognition of its participants. Both Aeneas Williams and Brett Favre were later inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame, in the classes of 2014 and 2016 respectively. While the draft was marked by these high-profile selections and future Hall of Famers, it also saw administrative irregularities, including two forfeited selections. Furthermore, no teams chose to claim any players during the supplemental draft that year, highlighting the specific focus teams placed on the primary college selection process.
