How a wildcard underdog toppled the mighty Yankees in 2003
In short: In 2003, the Florida Marlins pulled off a massive upset against the heavily-favored New York Yankees. Despite being outscored 21–17 over the seven-game series, the Marlins secured their second championship. It was a victory defined by massive payroll disparities and a manager who was the oldest to ever win the title.
In the 2003 Centennial World Series, the American League's New York Yankees faced the National League wild card Florida Marlins. The series was marked by significant financial inequality: the Yankees boasted a $164 million payroll, while the Marlins fielded a young roster with just $54 million. Despite the talent gap, the Marlins won the series four games to two, becoming the second consecutive wild card team to win the championship, following the 2002 Anaheim Angels.
The Marlins' success was driven by a dramatic mid-season turnaround. After starting the season 16–22, the team hired Jack McKeon, who had been retired for over two years. Under the 72-year-old McKeon—who became the oldest manager to win a World Series—the Marlins went 75–49 to secure the wild card. The roster was largely composed of players acquired after the Marlins' 1997 championship 'fire sale,' including stars like Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Juan Pierre.
The series was notable for several historical milestones and oddities. It was the 99th edition of the event, as the 1904 series was boycotted and the 1994 series was cancelled due to a strike. The Yankees' defeat was a statistical anomaly; until 2025, no other series saw the loser outscore the victor. The series also saw Hideki Matsui become the first Japanese player to hit a World Series home run, and Josh Beckett achieve a complete-game shutout in the deciding Game 6, the first such feat since Jack Morris in 1991.
