In short: When the 2004 NBA draft arrived, it signaled a massive shift in the game's demographics. For the first time in the modern era, nearly 40% of the selected players were born outside the United States, marking a significant international influx that would redefine the league's future talent pool.

The league's landmark event took place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on June 24, 2004. The Orlando Magic secured the first selection via a lottery, despite having only a 25 percent chance of winning. Meanwhile, the expansion Charlotte Bobcats were assigned the fourth pick, and the Minnesota Timberwolves were forced to forfeit their first-round selection due to salary cap violations. The Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls secured the second and third selections, respectively. Additionally, a record 92 players initially declared their intention to enter the draft that year.

The draft was notable for its high concentration of international talent and high school prospects. It featured four Russian-born players, the highest number of players from a single non-US country in a single draft until five Frenchmen were selected in 2016. This draft also marked the third and final time a player was selected directly out of high school with the number one overall pick. The event also featured a significant number of underclassmen who withdrew their names before the draft began. This specific class was also notable for having multiple high school players drafted in close succession.

Individual careers emerged from this class, including Dwight Howard, who became the only player to start all 82 games as a rookie straight out of high school. Other notable figures include Emeka Okafor, the Bobcats' first rookie draft pick and Rookie of the Year, and Ben Gordon, who became the first rookie in NBA history to win the Sixth Man of the Year Award. Andre Iguodala remained the sole active member of this significant class through the 2022–23 season. Al Jefferson also achieved the distinction of being named to an All-NBA team during his career. Furthermore, the draft utilised the 'green room' experience for the twenty-sixth time in league history.
