How a sudden influx of cash transformed Manchester City during the 2007–08 season
In short: The 2007–08 season marked a pivotal turning point for Manchester City. With new ownership under Thaksin Shinawatra and the appointment of manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, the club moved to shed its reputation for mid-table mediocrity. A £30 million spending spree on new talent promised a bold future for the historic club.
Entering the 2007–08 campaign, Manchester City was a club in transition. Having spent three of the previous four seasons hovering just above the relegation zone, the team required a significant injection of resources to remain competitive in the Premier League. The arrival of Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra provided the necessary capital, allowing manager Sven-Göran Eriksson to recruit eight high-profile players. This aggressive summer transfer strategy initially paid dividends, as the team spent much of the season firmly entrenched in the top five of the league table.
Despite this promising start, the momentum faltered during the final third of the season. The team’s performance dipped, ultimately resulting in a ninth-place finish. This late-season collapse led to the summary dismissal of Eriksson, a decision that polarized the club's supporters. Many fans viewed both Shinawatra and Eriksson as white knights who had fundamentally altered the club's trajectory through their respective financial and managerial contributions. Just two days after the season concluded, Mark Hughes was appointed as the new manager on 2 June 2008.
Beyond the managerial changes, the season was marked by aesthetic shifts and commemorative gestures. The club switched its kit supplier to Le Coq Sportif, introducing new home, away, and third kits. Notably, on 10 February 2008, the team wore a special, logo-free kit during the derby against Manchester United to honor the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. Despite the ninth-place finish, the club secured entry into the following season's UEFA Cup through the English Fair Play rankings, providing a silver lining to a season defined by both high ambition and turbulent leadership changes.
