The £200 million takeover that fundamentally altered English football history
In short: In September 2008, a massive transfer window deadline coincided with a seismic shift in ownership. Manchester City moved from the control of Thaksin Shinawatra to the Abu Dhabi United Group, signaling a new era of financial power that would soon redefine the landscape of the Premier League.
The 2008–09 season marked a pivotal turning point for Manchester City. At the start of the campaign, the club was under the private ownership of UK Sports Investments Limited, a firm led by former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. However, the landscape changed abruptly on 1 September 2008, the final day of the summer transfer window, when the Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited completed a takeover worth a reported £200 million. This period represented the club's twelfth year in the Premier League. It also marked their 117th season competing within the English football league hierarchy.
This acquisition brought Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan into the spotlight as the new owner. While Dr. Sulaiman Al-Fahim was initially seen as the potential chairman following negotiations at the Emirates Palace Hotel, the club eventually appointed Khaldoon Al Mubarak to the role. This transition of power was accompanied by aggressive moves in the player market; just minutes before the window closed, City secured Robinho from Real Madrid for a British record fee of £32.5 million. This transaction was finalized just before the deadline.
Beyond the boardroom, the season saw a visual shift in the club's identity. The team moved away from the thin white vertical stripes of the previous year, returning to the solid sky blue shirts traditionally linked to the club. This era also saw the introduction of a striking 'blaze orange' and navy third kit, alongside a new gold and black goalkeeper strip, marking a departure from the two-tone green kits used previously. The new goalkeeper kits included a mint-green option to supplement the primary gold and black strip. Additionally, the club's kits were manufactured by Le Coq Sportif.
