In short: During 2008–09, Manchester United sought to be the inaugural side since Milan to successfully defend the European Cup. While they fell short in the Champions League final against Barcelona, the season was defined by a relentless pursuit of silverware and the final, record-breaking chapter of Cristiano Ronaldo's first United era.

The 2008–09 campaign was a high-stakes endeavor for the Red Devils, marking their 34th consecutive season in the English top flight. The club entered the season with immense momentum, having recently won the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League. This success granted them entry into the 2008 UEFA Super Cup against Zenit Saint Petersburg, though they ultimately lost the match 2–1 in Monaco.

Domestic dominance was a primary focus, as United sought to equal Liverpool's record of 18 league titles. They achieved this by securing their third consecutive Premier League title, a feat they had previously accomplished between 1999 and 2001. The title was mathematically secured following a 0–0 draw against Arsenal on 16 May 2009. Beyond the league, they also captured the 2008–09 League Cup by defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties after a scoreless 120 minutes on 1 March 2009.

The season also served as a global showcase. United won the FIFA Club World Cup by defeating LDU Quito 1–0 in the final, becoming the first English side to win the competition. This period also marked the final season for Cristiano Ronaldo before his world-record transfer to Real Madrid in June 2009. His departure signaled the end of a prolific era, though his legacy at Old Trafford would eventually see him return for the 2021–22 season.

Despite the domestic and global trophies, the season ended with a bittersweet note in Europe. United reached the Champions League final but were defeated 2–0 by Barcelona, failing in their attempt to become the first team to defend the trophy in the Champions League era.
