The 2011 NFL draft produced a legendary class of superstars
In short: A single draft class can define an era. In 2011, the NFL saw a surge of unprecedented talent, with 12 of the first 16 players eventually earning Pro Bowl honors. From Heisman winners to future MVPs, this selection process fundamentally reshaped the league's landscape.
The 2011 NFL draft, held at Radio City Music Hall over three days from April 28 to April 30, was marked by significant league tension. An ongoing labor dispute and a lockout between owners and players meant that franchises could not sign or even contact their new draftees until the dispute was resolved. This restriction even prevented the Carolina Panthers from negotiating with their first overall pick, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, before the event began.
Despite the labor unrest, the talent on display was historic. The draft featured two Heisman Trophy winners: Cam Newton and Alabama's Mark Ingram II. It was the first time in NFL history that consecutive drafts included multiple Heisman winners, following Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow in 2010. The top two selections, Newton and Denver linebacker Von Miller, eventually faced one another in Super Bowl 50, with Miller earning the Super Bowl MVP award after the Broncos' victory.
The class was also notable for its influx of underclassmen. A record 56 players opted to forgo their remaining NCAA eligibility, and 43 of those were selected. This contributed to a trend where eight of the first ten players chosen were non-seniors, matching a record set in 2006. The draft also introduced a new rookie wage scale, which reduced salaries for first-round picks by implementing four-year contracts with a fifth-year option.
The long-term impact of the 2011 class is evident in its Hall of Fame-caliber talent. Beyond Newton and Miller, the draft produced stars like J. J. Watt, Julio Jones, and Richard Sherman. As of 2025, the remaining active players from this specific class include Von Miller, Cameron Jordan, Cameron Heyward, Andy Dalton, and Tyrod Taylor.
