In short: On April 21, 2001, the NFL gathered at Madison Square Garden to select the next generation of talent. While the class featured future Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers, it also contained stories of legal turmoil and careers that vanished almost as quickly as they began.

The 66th annual NFL Player Selection Meeting was defined by high-stakes trades and immense talent. The Atlanta Falcons secured the first overall pick by trading with the San Diego Chargers to select Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick. After a 21-month jail term related to an unlawful dog fighting ring, Vick achieved fame by securing the 2010 NFL Comeback Player of the Year title upon his arrival at the Philadelphia Eagles.

The draft's depth was remarkable; 17 of the 31 players selected in the first round eventually earned Pro Bowl honors. This elite group included legendary figures like Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson, taken 5th overall by the Chargers, and defensive tackle Richard Seymour, selected 6th by the New England Patriots. The class also featured future Hall of Famers Steve Hutchinson and Drew Brees, the latter of whom was selected in the second round.

However, the draft also showcased the volatility of professional football. Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke, selected in the fourth round by the Carolina Panthers, played only 12 games over five seasons before his release. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the final pick, Tevita Ofahengaue, known as 'Mr. Irrelevant,' never played in the NFL and later faced legal issues involving theft in Salt Lake City. While the University of Miami dominated the first round with four players, Florida State University led the draft overall with nine total selections.
