In short: They were the nation's elite, outscoring opponents 335 to 166 and reaching the national title game. Yet, in a swift move of administrative justice, every single win from that historic season was eventually vacated. Discover how academic misconduct dismantled one of college football's most dominant years.

The 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish were a powerhouse under head coach Brian Kelly. They finished the regular season with a perfect 12–0 record, earning a No. They occupied fourth place in the final AP poll. The Coaches Poll placed them at No. 3. The team was anchored by linebacker Manti Te'o, a unanimous All-American who led the nation's second-best defense, allowing just 12.8 points per game. Despite their dominance, they fell to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

The season was defined by high-stakes drama and individual heroics. Dublin's Aviva Stadium hosted a 50–10 victory over Navy. This marked the initial U.S. college game in Ireland since 1996. The Irish also secured pivotal victories against Michigan (13–6) and Stanford (20–13), the latter being an overtime thriller decided by a goal-line stand where defenders stopped Stepfan Taylor inches from the end zone. These wins were often fueled by Te'o, who played through personal tragedy following the deaths of his grandmother and girlfriend.

By November 2016, the 2012 season's history changed significantly. The NCAA infractions panel removed every win from both 2012 and 2013. The investigation revealed that a student athletic trainer had committed academic misconduct by completing coursework for two players and providing impermissible benefits to six others. Additionally, another player was found to have independently completed academic misconduct in eight courses. These findings effectively wiped the team's record from the official history books.
