A season of sudden shifts and a historic comeback in San Francisco
In short: The 2012 San Francisco 49ers season was defined by a sudden quarterback controversy and a miraculous comeback. After trailing by 17 points in the NFC Championship, they secured their sixth Super Bowl appearance, only to face their first-ever defeat on the game's biggest stage.
The season was marked by a mid-season transition at quarterback. During a Monday night victory against Arizona, Alex Smith sustained a concussion; the starter had achieved a 70% completion rate, leading the NFL, and a 104.1 passer rating, ranking third. His replacement, Colin Kaepernick, proved highly effective, leading the team to an 8–2–1 record as a starter and eventually securing the job permanently, despite head coach Jim Harbaugh describing the assignment as week-to-week.
On the field, the 49ers demonstrated immense resilience. They trailed 17–0 before beating the Atlanta Falcons 28–24 during the January 20, 2013, NFC Championship match. This marked their first NFC championship since 1994. A powerful showing in the Divisional Playoffs against the Green Bay Packers aided the win, featuring Kaepernick's NFL-record 181 rushing yards by a quarterback in one game.
Despite the momentum, the season ended in heartbreak. The 49ers faced the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII but lost 34–31, marking the franchise's first-ever Super Bowl defeat. The loss meant the Ravens became the only team with multiple Super Bowl appearances to have never lost one at that time, a distinction later shared by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The roster also saw high-profile additions, such as star wide receiver Randy Moss, who returned from retirement to play in his second Super Bowl during this campaign.
