A season of shifting rosters and a championship return to glory
In short: The 2014–15 NBA season marked a transformative era for the league. From high-profile free agency moves and veteran retirements to the Golden State Warriors reclaiming their former dominance, the 69th season reshaped the landscape of professional basketball through massive player movements and coaching changes.
The season was defined by significant movement in both player and coaching ranks. In the lead-up to the regular season, the NBA saw several major shifts: LeBron James announced his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers on July 11, 2014, while Carmelo Anthony committed to the New York Knicks on July 13. Meanwhile, veteran players like Shane Battier and Chauncey Billups announced their retirements, and Steve Nash concluded an 18-season career in March 2015. Even the coaching staffs underwent upheaval, with the Golden State Warriors hiring Steve Kerr on May 19, 2014, following the dismissal of Mark Jackson.
On the court, the regular season kicked off on October 28, 2014, with defending champions San Antonio Spurs facing the Dallas Mavericks. The mid-season highlight was the 2015 All-Star Game on February 15, 2015, at Madison Square Garden, where the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 163–158, led by MVP Russell Westbrook. The season also saw the Charlotte Hornets return to the court for their first official game as that franchise since 2002.
The campaign reached its climax in the 2015 NBA Finals. After a series spanning six games, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers to secure their fourth NBA title. This victory was particularly significant for the franchise, as it marked their first championship since 1975. The season concluded on June 16, 2015, cementing a new era of competition in the league.
