How the 2014 Mississippi State Bulldogs defied expectations to reach the top ranking
In short: Before the 2014 season, media experts predicted the Mississippi State Bulldogs would finish near the bottom of their division. Instead, the team achieved a historic breakthrough, securing their first-ever number one ranking and completing one of the most successful campaigns in the university's long football history.
Entering the 2014 season, the outlook for the Mississippi State Bulldogs was modest. During the annual SEC Media Days, a panel of 229 writers projected the team to place fifth in the Western Division. Other outlets, including NBC Sports and Athlon Sports, were even less optimistic, forecasting a sixth-place finish. Despite these low expectations, the team, led by head coach Dan Mullen in his sixth year, transformed their season into a landmark achievement for the program.
The team's performance reached a historic peak in mid-October. Following a victory over Auburn, Mississippi State climbed to the top spot in the AP Poll for the first time ever. This ascent was remarkably rapid, setting a record for the fastest climb to the number one position in the history of the AP Top 25, surpassing the previous six-week record held by Ohio State since 1954. Furthermore, when the College Football Playoff committee unveiled its inaugural poll on October 28, 2014, the Bulldogs were the first team to hold the top position.
Playing at their upgraded home venue in Starkville, the Bulldogs maintained their momentum throughout the year. They concluded the season with a 10–3 record, marking only the third time in the school's 110-year history that the team reached double-digit wins. This success earned them a spot in the Orange Bowl, representing just the second major-bowl appearance for the university. Although they ultimately fell to Georgia Tech in the bowl game, the season remains a defining chapter for the program, highlighted by the contributions of key players like safety Nickoe Whitley and running back LaDarius Perkins.
