How the 2025 Ole Miss Rebels Achieved Their Most Successful Season in Decades
In short: The 2025 Ole Miss Rebels football team shattered program records, securing their first eleven-win regular season and a historic debut in the College Football Playoff. Despite a dramatic late-season coaching transition, the squad reached the national semifinals, marking their most impressive performance since the early 1960s in a truly transformative year.
The 2025 season represented a watershed moment for the University of Mississippi. Under the guidance of head coach Lane Kiffin, the team achieved an unprecedented eleven-win regular season, capped by a decisive 38–19 victory over their rivals, Mississippi State, in the Egg Bowl on November 28. This success propelled the Rebels into the College Football Playoff for the first time in their history, drawing an average home crowd of 66,772 at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium—the highest attendance for any football program in the state.
The campaign was marked by significant upheaval just before the postseason. On November 30, Kiffin departed to lead LSU, and his request to remain through the playoff was rejected by athletic director Keith Carter. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding assumed the role of permanent head coach, guiding the team through their playoff run. Under Golding, the Rebels defeated Tulane in the opening round and overcame Georgia in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal. These victories brought their total season win count to 13, establishing a new school record.
The team’s journey concluded in the national semifinals with a loss to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Despite the exit, the Rebels finished the year ranked third in both the AP and Coaches polls. This achievement marked the program's first top-three or top-five ranking in 63 years, solidifying the 2025 season as the team's most significant accomplishment since the early 1960s. The transition from Kiffin to Golding, combined with their on-field dominance, created a unique chapter in the university's athletic history.
