In short: The 2016 AFL draft was far more than a simple recruitment period. Between complex trading schemes for future picks and a rare priority selection that changed hands multiple times, the season's roster movements revealed the intricate, high-stakes mechanics of professional football recruitment.

The 2016 AFL draft period was a complex sequence of trading and recruitment windows following the 2016 season. It began with free agency offers between 7 October and 19 October, followed by a trade period running from 10 October to 20 October. The process also included specific windows for delisted players throughout November, culminating in the national draft on 25 November at the Hordern Pavilion.

One of the most notable movements involved a rare priority pick awarded to the Brisbane Lions at the end of the first round, specifically at pick 19. This was the first time such a selection had been granted since rule changes in 2012. The selection's path proved unstable: following the Pearce Hanley deal to Gold Coast, it moved to Port Adelaide prior to being acquired by the Sydney Swans before the trade period closed.

The draft also featured significant structural changes. New rules for academy and father-son selections were implemented to prevent clubs from trading down the draft order solely to accumulate picks for academy bids. Under these rules, clubs could start the draft with only as many picks as they had empty positions on their playing lists. Additionally, the draft's complexity was heightened by the ability to trade future picks, a scheme that saw fourteen picks traded prior to the start of the 2016 trade period.

The era was also marked by the lingering effects of the 2012 Essendon supplements saga. Players James Kelly and Matt Dea, who had been signed as top-up players, were required to be delisted and re-signed to remain on Essendon's list. While the 2017 pre-season draft was scheduled for 28 November, it was ultimately cancelled after all 18 clubs declined to participate.
