Manchester United completed a historic European treble with a 2017 victory
In short: By lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in 2017, Manchester United joined an elite club of five teams to have won every major European honor. This achievement was made possible by a complex web of coefficient rankings and vacated berths that reshaped the tournament's landscape.
The 2016–17 UEFA Europa League marked the eighth season under its current branding, having transitioned from the UEFA Cup. The campaign concluded at the Friends Arena in Solna, Sweden, where Manchester United defeated Ajax 2–0. This victory was a landmark moment for the club, as it secured their first title in this specific competition and completed a 'treble' of major European trophies, placing them alongside Juventus, Ajax, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea.
The tournament structure relied on a sophisticated allocation system based on UEFA country coefficients. Out of 55 member associations, 188 teams were expected to participate. Generally, associations ranked 1–51 (excluding Liechtenstein) were granted three spots, while those ranked 52–53 received two. Unique cases existed for Liechtenstein and Gibraltar, which were limited to one spot each due to domestic league structures or specific committee decisions.
A notable nuance of this season involved the treatment of vacated berths. Because Sevilla won the previous year's Europa League, they qualified for the Champions League instead. This left their 2016–17 Europa League berth vacant; rather than passing it to another Spanish team, UEFA redistributed the spot within Cyprus (association 18) and promoted cup winners from Serbia and Slovenia. Additionally, 33 teams eliminated from the Champions League were transferred into the Europa League bracket.
The competition also saw significant debuts. While Manchester United had appeared in previous knockout phases, clubs like Sassuolo made their first-ever appearance in European football during this group stage. The season also highlighted the diversity of the tournament, featuring 21 national associations and including teams from second tiers, such as Zürich and Hibernian.
