The 15–0 season that cemented a college football dynasty
In short: In 2018, the Clemson Tigers achieved something rare: an undefeated season that left analysts debating their place in history. Led by a freshman sensation and a dominant defense, they navigated a high-stakes quarterback battle to secure their third national championship in just three years.
The 2018 Clemson Tigers season was defined by a transition in leadership at quarterback. While the team entered the year ranked second in both the AP and Coaches polls, the offseason was dominated by the competition between returning starter Kelly Bryant and true freshman Trevor Lawrence. Head coach Dabo Swinney initially attempted a shared approach, splitting drives between the two during early games against Furman, Texas A&M, and Georgia Southern.
This experiment ended when Swinney officially named Lawrence the starter, leading Bryant to announce his intention to transfer. Despite this internal shift, the team remained unstoppable on the field. They won all 12 regular-season games, marking their first undefeated regular season since 2015. The offense was bolstered by sophomore running back Travis Etienne, who recorded over 1,600 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns, earning him the ACC Player of the Year honors.
A powerful defensive front, led by veterans Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence and Austin Bryant, provided stability; all four entered the NFL in 2019. This defensive strength was vital in their postseason run, including a 30–3 victory over Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
The season culminated in a 44–16 victory over Alabama in the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. This win marked Clemson's third national title and their second in three years. They secured an undefeated 15–0 campaign, making them the initial College Football Playoff champion without a loss and the first major team to go 15–0 since Penn in 1897.
