The end of a historic home-field dominance for Clemson football
In short: For six years, the gates of Memorial Stadium remained an impenetrable fortress. In 2022, that era finally reached its conclusion. While the Tigers maintained a high standard of recruitment and performance, a single night in November saw one of college football's most enduring home-winning streaks come to an abrupt end.
The 2022 Clemson Tigers season was defined by a transition of eras. Under head coach Dabo Swinney, who was entering his 15th year at the helm, the program continued to prioritize elite talent acquisition. This was evidenced by their 2022 recruiting class, which featured 20 signees and was ranked as the top class in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and tenth nationally by the 247Sports Composite.
Despite this high-level recruitment, the team faced a significant historical milestone on November 26, 2022. The South Carolina Gamecocks managed to defeat Clemson at Memorial Stadium in South Carolina. This loss was culturally significant for the program because it shattered a nation-leading home winning streak that had persisted since 2016.
The streak lasted for 40 consecutive games, making it one of the longest periods of home-field dominance in modern college football. The conclusion of this run marked a shift in the regional rivalry dynamics between Clemson and South Carolina. Following the season, the program entered a standard transition period where players began navigating the transfer portal during the designated 45-day window following championship selections.
The 2022 campaign serves as a case study in how even the most dominant programs can experience sudden shifts in momentum. While Clemson remained a powerhouse in terms of talent and conference standing, the loss of the home winning streak highlighted the volatility of high-stakes collegiate athletics.
