The year college football broke records and redefined its own rules
In short: The 2018 NCAA Division I FBS season wasn't just a series of games; it was a structural overhaul. From radical rule changes to historic futility streaks ending, the season served as a laboratory for the modern era of the sport, culminating in a perfect season for the first time since 1897.
The 2018 season introduced several pivotal regulatory shifts designed to alter the flow of play. The NCAA approved rules allowing players to fair catch inside the 25-yard line for a touchback and restricted offensive blocking below the waist to five yards past the line of scrimmage. Additionally, a 10-second runoff was implemented for overturned replay calls in the final minute of halves, mirroring an NFL rule adopted in 2010. These changes, alongside a new collaborative instant replay model, signaled a move toward more standardized, high-stakes officiating. On the field, the season was defined by extremes. The LSU–Texas A&M game became a marathon of endurance, lasting nearly five hours and going to seven overtimes to tie the NCAA record for the longest game.
In contrast, the season saw the end of some of the sport's longest losing streaks: Kansas ended a 46-game road losing streak, while Kentucky secured its first win in Gainesville since 1979, snapping a 31-game losing streak in an uninterrupted series. The year also served as a turning point for program identities and infrastructure. While Clemson Tigers achieved a perfect 15-0 season—the first since the 1897 Penn Quakers—other programs faced upheaval. Louisville was forced to strip the Papa John's name from its stadium following a controversy involving the company's founder. Meanwhile, a massive wave of stadium renovations, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars across schools like Arkansas, Georgia, and Indiana, underscored the sport's growing commercial and architectural ambitions.
