The 2019 NHL draft: a high-stakes lottery for elite hockey talent
In short: In June 2019, Vancouver hosted the 57th NHL entry draft. Beyond the scouting reports, the event was shaped by complex lottery odds and intricate trades, determining which franchises would secure the next generation of stars like Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko.
The 2019 NHL entry draft, held on June 21–22 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, was a pivotal moment for several franchises. A lottery held on 9 April 2019 decided the initial three selections, awarding the first, second, and third picks to the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils respectively. This lottery system, which has evolved since 2014, uses a weighted mechanism that provides non-playoff teams a chance at the top spot, though the odds for the four lowest-finishing teams were decreased in recent years.
The draft's complexity was heightened by a web of conditional trades. For example, the Colorado Avalanche acquired Ottawa's first-round pick through a 2017 deal for Matt Duchene, a condition triggered when Ottawa's 2018 pick finished in the top ten. Similarly, the Arizona Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers engaged in a direct exchange of first-round picks on June 21, 2019, involving the 11th and 14th overall selections. These maneuvers allowed teams to manipulate their draft positions to suit their long-term rebuilding strategies.
To qualify for the draft, players had to be born from January 1, 1999, until September 15, 2001. However, non-North American players born in 1998 could also participate. Additionally, players drafted in 2017 who remained unsigned and were born after June 30, 1999, were permitted to re-enter. As of 2026, the 2019 class has produced 71 active NHL players, cementing its legacy in the league's history.
