How a new lottery system reshaped the 2019 NBA Draft
In short: When the 2019 NBA Draft arrived in Brooklyn, the stakes had changed. A newly implemented weighted lottery system meant the league's worst teams no longer held a guaranteed advantage, fundamentally altering the path for rising superstars and international prospects.
The 201s NBA Draft, held on June 20, 2019, at the Barclays Center, marked a significant shift in how talent was distributed. For the first time, the league utilized a new weighted lottery system designed to expand the top four picks. Under this new mechanism, the three teams with the worst records—the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns—each held a 14 percent chance of securing the top spot. This was a departure from previous structures, as the lottery was expanded to include the top four picks and provided teams with better records an increased opportunity to climb the draft order.
The results of the May 14 lottery proved just how volatile the new system could be. While the New Orleans Pelicans secured the first overall pick with only a 6 percent chance, they were part of a broader trend where three of the four teams in the top four positions rose from at least six spots lower in the lottery. This movement allowed the Pelicans to select Duke forward Zion Williamson, a centerpiece of a highly talented Duke class that also saw teammates R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish drafted in the top 10.
Beyond the lottery, the draft showcased a growing global footprint. The class featured the first Japanese player selected in the first round, Rui Hachimura, and the first Angolan player, Bruno Fernando. The draft also highlighted extreme physical outliers, such as Tacko Fall, who set combine records for height at 7 feet 7 inches. This era of the draft was defined by a complex web of eligibility rules, where underclassmen could navigate the tension between professional ambitions and maintaining college eligibility, provided they managed their agent agreements carefully.
