How AC Milan reclaimed the throne after an eleven year wait
In short: In the 120th season of Italy's top-tier football, a historic rivalry reached a fever pitch. As the final matchday arrived, one club secured its 19th title, ending a decade of dominance by their cross-town rivals and marking a dramatic shift in the league's hierarchy.
The 2021–22 Serie A season, officially known for sponsorship reasons as Serie A TIM, concluded with a definitive victory for AC Milan. On 22 May 2022, the club secured the championship following a 3–0 win against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore. This victory was particularly significant as it represented the club's 19th league title and their first championship since 2011. The race was remarkably tight; the defending champions, Inter Milan, finished the season in second place, trailing only two points behind the winners.
While the battle at the top focused on the Milanese giants, the season was also defined by the return of clubs following decades of absence from the top flight. Venezia secured their place in the league by defeating Cittadella in the promotion playoffs, marking their first appearance in the top tier since the 2001–2002 season. Similarly, Salernitana ended a 23-year hiatus, playing their first Serie A match since 1999. Empoli also rejoined the elite after a two-year period away from the division.
The season also saw significant turnover at the bottom of the table. Crotone and Benevento both suffered relegation to Serie B after single-season stints in the top league, while Parma departed the division after three years. Individual performances also left a mark, notably Dušan Vlahović, who recorded 17 goals for Fiorentina before his departure following matchday 23.
