The season that broke the Milan-Inter-Juventus hegemony
In short: For over two decades, Italian football was dominated by a familiar trio of giants. The 2022–23 Serie A season shattered this status quo, marking a rare moment of upheaval in the Scudetto landscape while navigating complex legal battles and logistical experiments.
The 2022–23 season was a landmark for Italian football because it ended a long period of predictable dominance. For the first time since Roma in 2001, a club outside the 'Big Three'—AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus—claimed the title. Napoli secured their third league trophy, ending a 33-year drought that had persisted since Diego Maradona led them to victory in 1990.
The campaign was defined by significant administrative and legal volatility. In January 2023, Juventus was initially docked 15 points following an investigation into manipulated balance sheets involving approximately 60 million euros of false gains. While the highest court ordered a re-examination in April 2023, the final ruling in May resulted in a 10-point deduction and subsequent exclusion from the 2023–24 UEFA Europa Conference League for violating finance regulations.
Beyond the league table, the season featured unique structural shifts. It marked the first return of playoff matches since 2005 to resolve ties at the top of the standings. The league also attempted a bold international expansion by proposing a tournament in the United States during the FIFA World Cup for non-national team players; however, logistical and funding hurdles led to its cancellation.
The season's conclusion saw significant movement in club history. Monza made their debut at the top flight as the 67th team to do so, while Cremonese returned after a 26-year absence. Conversely, Genoa ended a 15-season run in the top tier, and Spezia was relegated following a one-match tie-breaker against Hellas Verona.
