The only team to win it all without winning their conference
In short: In 2021, the Georgia Bulldogs achieved a statistical anomaly that defied decades of college football logic. They secured a national championship despite losing their conference title game—a feat so rare it remained unmatched for three years until 2024.
Under sixth-year head coach Kirby Smart, the 2021 Georgia Bulldogs finished with an impressive 14–1 overall record. While they dominated the SEC with an 8–0 mark in regular play, their path to the pinnacle was unconventional. Returning to the College Football Playoff for once since 2017, they beat Michigan during the semifinals and then overcame Alabama with a score of 33–18 at the finish.
Georgia secured its initial national championship post-1980, creating a milestone: it represented the earliest instance since 1936's Associated Press poll start where a squad clinched an AP National Championship despite failing to win their conference title that year. Furthermore, they were the first No. 3 ranked team to ever win the CFP National Championship.
The roster's success was built on a foundation of elite talent and defensive prowess, with experts citing it as one of the greatest defenses in the history of the sport. Even after 13 players departed via transfers following 2020, the roster yielded 15 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft—the highest amount for one university during the current seven-round period (1994–present).
This season served as the first half of a historic back-to-back national championship run, which concluded with a 65–7 victory over TCU in 2022. While their 14 wins set a school record at the time, that milestone was quickly eclipsed by a perfect 15–0 campaign the following year.
