How a pandemic and political protest reshaped the 2021 MLB draft
In short: The 2021 Major League Baseball draft was far from business as usual. Between a global pandemic forcing a shortened 20-round format and a sudden relocation from Atlanta to Denver due to political protests, the event was defined by unprecedented shifts in how the league builds its future.
Held from July 11 to July 13, 2021, the draft was originally slated for Atlanta. Following the Georgia State Legislature's adoption of the Election Integrity Act of 2021, MLB moved the draft and All-Star Game to Denver on April 5, 2021. This unusual setting coincided with a significant structural change: due to a March 26, 2020, agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, the draft was shortened to just 20 rounds to account for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The selection process was heavily influenced by the previous year's performance and recent scandals. The Pittsburgh Pirates, holding the worst record from the 2020 season, held the first overall pick and selected Henry Davis. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros faced unique penalties; as a consequence of their involvement in a sign-stealing scandal, the team forfeited both their first- and second-round selections.
The draft ultimately saw 612 college and high school players selected. While the draft concluded in mid-July, teams had until August 1, 2021, to finalize contracts with their new players. The first player from this specific class to reach the major leagues was Chase Silseth, who debuted for the Los Angeles Angels on May 13, 2022.
This draft serves as a snapshot of a volatile era for professional baseball, where pandemic-related logistics, social political movements, and disciplinary actions for rule-breaking all converged to alter the path for the next generation of players.
